Ketika pertama kali aku dikenalkan pada konsep mati syahid, aku ingin mengakalinya. Aku pikir aku bisa bermalas-malasan sembahyang lalu ikut perang pada suatu hari ketika dewasa untuk bisa masuk surga. Besar sedikit, aku tidak percaya soal mati syahid. Aku mulai memahami konsekuensi dari perbuatan berdosa bagi diri sendiri dan orang lain, lalu tidak percaya semua itu bisa diampuni dengan begitu mudahnya. Besar sedikit lagi, aku kembali percaya. Aku menyaksikan perempuan-perempuan di sekitarku melahirkan, kesulitan, kesakitan, untuk sebuah kepentingan yang bukan miliknya sendiri. Untuk seorang manusia baru, untuk suaminya, untuk keluarganya, untuk suku dan umatnya. Belum lagi perjuangan membesarkan manusia baru itu. Aku perempuan, jadi aku bersimpati. Sepertinya adil kalau perjuangan semacam itu diganjar surga secara instan. Someone with an endearing smile hates the shape of her lips, and someone with beautiful legs despises the skin on her knees. Some wish they were born with lighter skin, while others battle persistent acne. Many of these self-resentments stem from class-mate teasings in middle school, while some of it originate from the very spaces they sought comfort in, forcing them to spend their lives proving they possess other qualities to compensate for their perceived lack of beauty.
